I actually really love this tune.
Definitely give it another go. For me, I didn't have too much of a problem with any of the individual production or arrangement choices, it's just that the whole package is awfully muffled and crowded. To some degree, it has a lo fi appeal that works for me (perhaps not others), but this is a bit too much in that direction.
I hope you can replicate that small far-away tone of the guitar in the intro as that sets it up very nicely. Mayber a little bit more movement to the bass here and there next time around?
Other than Pavement and MMJ, I'm totally unfamiliar with the other acts mentioned in this thread (don't get out much), but to me, the middle section reminded me a bit of the flaming lips (forgetting your accent for a bit), which is a very good thing in my book.
