What are the noticible differences? We are scraping by with two 58s as overheads right now, but we have an Nt1, and if the diffence would be phenomonal I would consider going and grabbing another Nt1, or even and Nt2!
What do you guys think?

Thanks
Robert

We're in the middle of recording drums for our CD and we're using matched Equitek (CAD) E-100's for overheads, which are "medium diaphragm" condensers. Just what we happened to have around that were matched.

We've also used Beta 58's for overheads in the past. I'm pretty sure they were used on the song "Self-Destruct For Me" on this page:

I think with proper placement and EQ'ing many mics could work, but with cymbals you're dealing with a complex mixture of harmonics and high-frequency interactions. I'd rather have a condenser to capture the nuances.

YMMV,
