Heyas, I've got a nice laptop and studio setup, but the sound card with the laptop is horrible, as expected. I know it's not normal to do all your mixing on a laptop but it's all I've got. Anyway it seems the only decent laptop sound card is the creative audigy 2 ZS. Are there any other roads I can take to get good sound quality off of my laptop? ...(can I buy some external peripheral to get good sound quality or something?) ...I'm really in the dark on this topic and could use some input. thanks.

I dont know much about the Audigy, and yes there are other ones.
They have much better sound cards for laptops.
What is your budget?

Go to sweetwater, zzounds, musiciansfriend, or any other on-line out fit and you'll find a plethora of Firewire soundcards.

Firewire soundcards should all work fine with your laptop.

Name brands are
M-Audio
ECHO
MOTU
RME

(note they are listed from least expensive to most expensive).

As Robert said, what's your budget?

If you are just worried about the sound coming out, I would go with the Echo Indigo I/O. It's a pcmcia sound card that works great and sounds great. I had one for a short time but I had to return it to get my Firebox as I needed more inputs.

Thanks for the advice. I'm looking at the M-audio FireWire Audiophile Computer Recording Interface. I'm new to this so I've got a few questions if anyone knows... Looking at the pics of the device, it doesn't seem to have any 1/4" inputs or outputs - is this normal? Everything looks stereo - I don't know how that works with other devices and studio monitors. Should I be looking at the other M-Audio Solo Mobile FireWire Audio Interface (which says it has 2 1/4" inputs and outputs)? If I take this route, however, it means I can only record 2 devices at one time (or will it only support 1 device at one time?) ...Also, will this be sufficient enough to nullify the need of a good sound card (Can I playback all of my music and whatnot through the box output into my studio monitors, will it even sound good?) Sorry for all of the questions, just need to clear them up. I'd appreciate any help.

I can answer one and the answer is yes. Yes, you can record two devices at once.
