Which would be better? To spend 759 euros on a tascam 788 which has 24 bit capability or to spend 1518 euros on a Red Submarine pre built laptop for audio recording with these specs?

Intel celeron 2.6 ghz
256 ddr memory
20 gb hard drive
Edirol UA-1A usb card (16 bit only)
Windows xp home edition.
I have cubase vst already

There's not a chance in hell I'd ever go back to stand alone recording, but that's me. I hate looking at those tiny friggin screens.

am I going to get problems when recording with a laptop? will i get cracks and pops during recording? are laptops more stable than pc's?

Generally a Laptop is slower than a PC. the bus speed and the harddrive speeds are slower. If you have a good sound card you should be fine, but laptops are not upgradable like a PC is

Yeah, they're not upgradeable, except for the RAM and the harddrive. Bus speeds are generally close, as you can get a notebook with a 400Mhz bus, and up to 2.8Ghz speed for the CPU.
