Hi, I'm new to this forum. I'm a guitarist, and my main focus is recording in my home studio(I enjoy the flexiblity), and sending it off to be mixed and mastered(I've found nice sources for just that !). I was going to build a custom computer, but school and a car come first for me :( .....But I had some questions about a laptop recording rig. Right now I'm using an Acer Aspire with 640 GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM, Intel Core i3-380M processor, with windows 7 x64 cubase 5 and I plan on getting Superior Drummer and using electronic drums to program it. I play metal, have pro gear guitar-wise, with an sm57 close miced on the cab, DI box for bass, and an sm58 with a removed windscreen and proper pop filter to vocals(when needed). No room treatment though, but in my particular case, the room isn't as important since most of sources don't pick it up too much. Mainly, I was wondering what interface will get me in the ballpark for great recordings so the overall package will sound better. I was thinking either the EMU 0404 USB or the Focusrite Scarlet. I must be usb i think, there's no firewire on this.

Before buying an interface, determine how many channels/tracks you will want to record at one time - in the future, not just now - and make your purchase based on that number. You're going to need some monitors, too.

i use a zoom r16. can be used as an interface or standalone recorder. 8 channels. works a treat for what i need.

I usually only record one track at a time, but i would never particularly need to record more than 3 or 4 at once. Any monitor recommendations? I've been through the forums countless times and can't make a decision

rp5's by rokit

+1 for the Rokits. I believe the Acer has a 5400 rpm hard drive. That may be a limitation. Not sure if you can upgrade that. Maybe record audio to an external 7200 drive.
