Howdy.

I record to an Akai dps16. When I change that it will be to another HD recorder (not a computer).

I am interested, however, using a computer to do editing, apply plug-ins, etcetera. I am interested in a laptop primarily for the portability, occasional portable recording, mixing outside of the house, all the implied portability advantages, including the fact that the home 'puter can be for the wife and kids (not that it's all that, anyway)

So...

I checked out the dell site 'cause after searching around here, I peeped a site where someone was using a dell inspiron, and I know that dell (at least it was last time I looked at this sort of thing) pretty good in the bang vs. buck vibe.

What I didn't see was one mention of a firewire port. so does anybody know if that is so standard that they don't mention it, or what's up?

Also, I'm looking on some basic advice on making this step. I was thinking along the lines of...

Projected uses:
spectral analysis
editing
apply plug-ins
two track mastering (I know, the good masters are done by masters who dedicate themselves to mastering the masterful art of mastering...I'm talking about until I reach the ma$terful level when I can pay the ma$ter$)
location recording
travel mixing

Hypothetical setup
laptop (dell or somebody else)
USB or firewire interface (tascam 228/428, M-audio, $500 or under)
plug-ins as I can afford them
Sound Forge or other 2 track specialist

Any advice will, I'm sure, be helpful

Thanks!
