Laptop loaded WIndows 7 and audio doesn't work on speakers, only headphone works?

any suggestions?

the windows mixer shows levels moving and the volume control works when headphones are plugged in....but for the laptop speaker its a no go...dead silence?

laptop is a

Gateway
INTEL T2060 1.6Ghz
1G ram
32bit

On the windows mixer window there is a menu called "Device" when you click that are your speakers selected. I have a laptop that likes to switch to SPDIF out every once and a while for some reason.

i checked some thing on the mixer like you said. theres not even the sound for windows defaults?
through the headphones all is good and I can plug a set of speakers to it and alls good?
maybe hardware? the little windows mixer levels seems to show activity on the "system sounds" channel....
