Hey guys! Nice forum, got a lot of answers through here in the past. I'm stumped on this one though so I thought I would throw it your way! 
I'm currently setting up a home/portable studio based around my new HP laptop but I'm stuck on which soundcard to go with. Initially I had it sorted and was gonna go with the discontinued EMU 1616M Cardbus package, allowing me to just use the cardbus part for portable DJing with my VCI-100 then plug in the breakout box for home and on the go recording with 8 or more inputs when needed. Perfect!!
Not quite...cardbus/pcmcia is 5 year old tech and my laptop has an express card slot (which until an hour ago I thought were the same thing)
So now I'm back to square one!
Laptop specs are:
C2D 2.5ghz w/ 4GB Ram
2 x USB2 1 x Firewire 400 4pin 1 x Express Card
As you can see I'm short on I/O's, especially as I was hoping to have the VCI-100 in one USB, an Akai AK49 in the other and an external HD in the firewire.
The only Express Card souncards I can find are the Echo Indigo (no recording) or RME solutions that are way out of my pricerange of $3-400
If anyone has any ideas then it would be greatly appreciated, or any recommendations on firewire/usb 2.0 interfaces that would be suited to me as I'm now lost in sea of choice

(PS: The best I've come up with so far is the Maudio Fast Track Ultra but I'm wary of M-Audio quality)
