For the past several months, I've been "first real pre" shopping. This was a sometimes painful process as I poured over reviews and tried out different products...yada yada yada....

I'm posting this because there may be some people out there going through the same thing. So in case you sitting on the fence....

My Langevin DVC arrived last week, but I wanted to use it a bit before making any comments about it. I'm extremely happy with this box. BY FAR is it the one single variable that has made the biggest impact on the quality of my recordings. I was expecting great and that's what I got. It feels good to know you made the right decision about a purchase like this.

Acoustic guitar: What can I say...I recorded the best stereo acoustic guitar track of my life this past weekend using a pair of Oktava MK-012 small diaphragm condenser mics. It's simple stunning. I now have stereo imaging like I've never had before. The limiters are the heat too...

Vocals: The DVC pres place the vocals very accurately in the sound field. My vocals now have this realness to them and sit perfectly in the mix with very little effort. Setup time? There is no setup time. I set the limiters and rolled off a little high-end (RODE NTK is a little splashy) and hit record. For me, the limiters are totally transparent until more than 6-8 dB of reduction...and even then it doesn't sound "bad". Now I understand what people mean when they say the EQ and the limiters are very "musical". For me, that means you can still have usable tracks even if the limiters are really putting the squeeze on something. Only someone listening for limiting would really notice it.

Bass: I read a great review of the DVC where Myles Boisen mentions "sputtering white noise from both DI's"....that worried me a bit for obvious reasons, but I hear NOTHING like this in my unit. Maybe my ears aren't as well trained as Myles, but I have a pretty discriminating ear and could heard nothing but the pure tone of my guitar/bass from both DI's or deafening silence.

The biggest surprise for me was how good my Maison (active electronics) bass sounds through this box. Before I was using a FATMAN2 tube device as a bass DI. It sounded ok, but when I tried the DI on the DVC, I couldn't believe how much better the low end sounded. I think this is the first time I've ever really heard what my bass sounds like. the low end is soooo much tighter...pure tone and no distortion whatsoever. The bass lines that I recorded for the demo I was working on sounded smooth and thick. Overall, a huge improvement on whole track.

Also, the folks at Mercenary Audio are great to work with. They responded quickly to all of my questions immediately...as did EveAnna Manley. I couldn't be happier with my decision.

...and it looks so fucking cool in the rack :)
