About 5 years ago I bought this valve LC50. Two years ago I stopped playing guitar regular in a band, played more drums, then the amp went kappow. Took it to get repaired recetly, apparently some of the capacitors had burned out. It's been working fine the last two days until today when I was tapping away and it just went again, there was a smell I recognised (similar to my old bassman head) and then nothing. So... its not the fuses. Is there any way to tell if its the valves? Just by sight? They all seem to be glowing similarly. the power is all still there, just no sound (checked cables, definitely the amp). I'm just hoping its the valves and not the caps again because I'd have to lug it 150 miles back to where it was repaired!

Could someone give me some pointers? I'm a bit gutted really.

Cheers

Not a lot of Laneys round here I expect drumgeek...

I've got an LC30-II which has found its way back to the shop on one occasion over the three years I've owned it - it had power supply problems that were causing a crackling sound. Guy fixed it OK but had to replace both the preamp tubes and some electrical stuff. Hope you'll forgive my lack of technical knowledge, but he did stress that the problem came from the power supply itself - no smells though.

Good luck, I thought my tubes were OK because they were glowing OK, but apparently not. Not that I'd know - he could have replaced a 10c capacitor to fix it and merely pretended to change the tubes as far as I would have known. Sure he didn't though...

Cheers

The gowing part is just the heater. The heater needs to be lit for the tube to work, but just because the heater is lit doesn't mean the tube is good. If you are smelling something, you must have burnt something. Road trip!
