Lag in the monitor. D:

Hello, I'm not TOO new to home recording but i JUST got my own equipment. (which isn't saying much). I recordwith a 1/4 in - 1/8 in adapter and a 1/8 in computer mic. its all good quality and my guitars are nice, but when i monitor my sound there is a HUGE lag. Its very frustrating. Any ideas or questions that could get this thing rolling, or even fixed?
 
I forgot to mention im also runnin' a desktop pc, and plugging into the recoring port in the back.

You will need a dedicated recording interface.

Running into the PC's recording input doesn't give good recording results and is the prime cause of lag.
 
Gecko Zzed's right. If you're strapped-for-cash, the ASIO4ALL wrapper can help with latency, but you'll get much better results with an interface that supports the right signals and has *much* cleaner preamps.
 
FireStudio for the win. Be sure you have a firewire card with the TI chipset and disable your on-board audio at the BIOS level (if that's what you're using).

...or, you know, any other interface that meets your needs and is within your budget.

Absolutely.
I'm definitely partial to the Firestuff. When I first got into VST's I tried a bunch of interfaces and the old FireBox made it all work for me. The thing that surprised me was how much better everything sounded when I got it.
 
Yeah I know what you mean. Presonus uses some nice preamps in their interfaces. I own a Firepod now. I'll be getting a StudioLive next year :D
 
At $300 it's kind of a no-brainer.
If that's more than you're willing to pay for a quality interface then you should really consider a different hobby.
 
I see a "Thumbs Down" logo next to this heading. Can someone explain how and why this happens? Not for this particular thread in particular, just in general is what I mean.
