The above link SHOULD take you to an MP3 of a test of a Kustom Defender 5H into an ETONE 200W 4Ohm box (1 single huge speaker)
the 1st set is with my usual Royal Artist & the 2nd set is with the humbucker that was installed some time in the last 30 years or more into a GuyaTone Mosrite copy.
Any thoughts on the better tone and position?
Any thoughts on the use of a bass box for 5w valve amp & guitar?
Oh, the amp is set at 9.30 for volume - any louder is painful without ear protection.
Linked tested & working - 10.7mb so don't go there if you don't want to download that much.

I like the other cab better I think. But on this test run the edge of the speaker with both guitars sounds best to me. Center is bad, off-axis is okay, but edge worked best to me.

They all sound stiff though. I dunno, I don't think that amp is putting out enough power to even tickle that speaker.

The first clip was my favorite for "just a bit of breakup" . The off axis seemed like it had mor room in it. The center was a bit bright for me. If 9:30 is loud, how do you get that over the top overdrive without ear protection? I think they could have used a second volume then. Overall though, I think the two guitars pickup configs give you enougn bite to cover a good range of tunes.

Ray, you need to fly to Texas and come record with me for a day. I'll show you some loud. :D

Clip 4 was mine, what a wonderful thing it is to have varied preferences. Late onset guitar tone envy, is it contagious?
I hope all is good with you Ray,

All the best

Tim

greg,
5 watts isn't enough to get any sort of speaker excursion going I know. If you have to clear the house of weinerdogs to record guitar you certainly play loud, loud, loud. Next attempt at tone I'll use the marshall box again and experiment with placement on the #1 speaker as well as cranking it a bit more. I bought some gear from harvey gerst for just that purpose, (in ear bus connected to the interface with 29db noise reduction ear protectors over them - a system designed/cobbled together by him for recording drummers). Actually, given how sensitive your ears are to detail etc how do you manage LOUD?
ido1957,
Thanks Gerry. I do have more options now. What did you think of the humbuckers through the amp?
Phrasemaker,
Difference is great. I've noted the individual preferences, cross referenced them with musical styles of the listener and now have something to work from. Contagion is in the ear of the beholden I fear. All is reasonably OK in SE Oz. School report writing time - add school report editing to that & you have my weekend nailed.

I use ear protection. Always. At gigs, at home, during band practice, during recording, always. I track loud guitars with the cab in another room, or I'll sit next to it with drummer headphones which give like 30db of sound killing. It's still loud, but not ear damaging loud. And I like the earth moving feel of a loud amp. Being primarily a drummer I like to feel things happening. I'm used to feeling sound. A loud amp kind of just seems right to me. And loud isn't that bad if it's for short periods. I'll dial in my amp blaring loudly without ear protection, but it only takes a few minutes. And when playing my drums, I'm wearing ear mufflers or those little booger ear plugs. I live a loud life, but I take the necessary precautions to protect my ears.
