It's for the studio I'm using and I expect a huge improvement in piano and an orchrastra soundbank that is actually usable..

Music123 want to sell me an extended warrentee for about $150.. It's 2 year extended with complete coverage but the in-house type that I'm always wary of..

Anyone used this keyboard for any lenght of time and if so, do you think an extended warrentee is needed?

If the keyboard was Roland, Korg, or Yamaha I wouldn't even consider an extended warranty because they are built really solid. With Kurzweil you can sometimes run into problems, so it might be worth it. You won't really know until the 2 years are up whether you wasted your money or not. I personally don't have a strong feeling either way, but that's not a keyboard I would buy anyway.

It won't be doing any traveling, it'll remain in the studio it was bought for. I know it's not the best unit but did offer alot for my price range.

What kind of potential problems should I be concerned about?

I'm not so much apposed to an extended warrentee at all but am more concerned about the value of the warrentee itself? I've seen many that are not worth the paper they are printed on, that's my real concern.

If it's not travelling then I think you have a lot less to worry about. My main concern would be the keyboard, dead keys, that sort of thing. I've seen some Kurzweil's with keyboard action problems, mostly rental units that I've played. Seems like that is what goes first.

Yeah, and I've heard of cases where the outputs just start getting really noisy.

But I don't have any links to back that up.

To bad, I would have appreciated that info. Thanks anyway.

If it was ONE isolated incident, it would be USELESS and irresponsible.

I have a PC2R and I'm very impressed with the orchestral ROM.

Music123 is pretty reputable though. If you feel you'll need the warranty, go for it.

Does it have KDFX? If not, you'll definitely want to investigate going that route.

EDIT: oops, well it comes with a dual-effects processor based on KDFX, so you're good.

Let me see... offering somone info that might be pertanant to a problem still not solved 3 pages into a thread is "useless and irresponsible"??? (That's not what the person looking for help said..)

Excuse me for mistaking this forum for a place people could exchange feedback and opinions on various products, I didn't realise any company(s) had exclusive promotional rights here.

As a matter of fact, I'm sure not one does and the heavy-handed tactics used is doing no one any favors.

*sigh* of course you missed the point, and still do.

And what point could that possibly be? When I'm about to make a important purchase I want all views and opinions on it, good and bad. And especially if I'm having a problem with something not working right, again..., I would appreciated any and all info that might help me solve that problem. That's just common sense.

But in that other thread the problem was solved, and the cause was user error not the gear itself. So copying and pasting negative information from months or years old posts from other forums was indeed irrelevant and misleading in that case.

My post earlier in this thread about keyboard issues with Kurzweil's I've used was based on first hand personal experience. Kurzweil says that those issues have been resolved, so the only way to really know is to buy the thing and use it for a while.

I really think it will be a fine keyboard, but if it gives you greater peace of mind, then go for the extended warranty. That's what those warranties are about, peace of mind.

There were some issues with the early K2500 with buttons breaking and such that were caused by the factory using cheaper parts than was specified by the engineers. The later keyboards use better parts, so issues are rare. I am not sure with the PC1X, but if it uses the same keyboard as the K2600X then those have issues with the Fatar keybaords that they use where the key weights become unglued, resulting in stuck keys and squeals. This has been reported by some, but it is still a rare occurence and can be easily fixed by any repair center or even by the user themselves if they feel comfortable with taking it appart to get to the keybed.

As a general rule, extended warrentees are of very little value. As SonicAlbert indicates, insurance (which is really what an extended warrentee is) provides piece of mind for those who need peace of mind.

If the Kurzweil will sit in the studio and will be used in a reasonable manner (don't play the keys with your feet) and will be maintained with reasonable care (don't leave it plugged in during lightning storms, don't allow beverages near it, etc) - the potential for a failure that would need an extended warrentee is very small. I've owned a Kurz and know several people who have owned Kurz and I have not had or heard of any unreasonable problems (no more than Roland, Yamaha, etc)

I personnally think (based on about 50 years as a consumer, and several years in retail music sales) that most extended warrenties are not needed and are simply an additional profit center for the retail establishment.

But, if a $25 or $40 or whatever the cost of the insurance gives you piece of mind, go for it.
