Okay, I think I'm going to do it. I'm going to order two KSM32s. I'll use them mainly as drum overheads, but also for recording my saxophone, acoustic guitar, and vocals.

Don't do it man.....

Don't do it!!!

I got my first pair of '32s back in 1967. Back then I was a spry young pup, eager to take on the world. Little did I know that when I opened that black laquered box from Shure my life would change forever.

No, just kidding. Let us know how they sound at least. Post a MP3 on this post when you get 'em.

I think I read somewhere that the 32 worked better on drums than the 44. No?

I've not read or heard that. If your going to use the mics for overheads and vox, sax, acoustic guitar the KSM44 is by far the better choice IMHO plus you pick up the option of 3 polar patterns. If you mainly want to use the mics just as overheads then instead of buying the KSM32's I'd check out a pair of AT4033's which will do the same for less ( a pair will run you around $500 or so ) and sound just as good. You never mentioned what kind of mic pre you are using so in regards to all of the above it's all relevant. Good luck.

I personally don't think you can go wrong with a pair of KSM 32's OR 44's. Both are fine microphones, that will find lots of applications in any mic collection. However, at this price point, I'd recommend that you at least consider a pair of ADK TL's, instead. I think they street right at $1000 for a matched pair.

But, different strokes for different folks.

...and now an opinion from the oposite side. I disagree with this statement. The Shure KSM32s are my favorite overhead mics at any price point. I work in high end studios all over the world and even when I am at a studio with a quater million dollar mic locker, I bring my own KSM32s in case they do not own a pair. The KSM32 is very vesatile and sounds great on many sources. It actually beat out a Neuman U47 for vocals on one project I was doing. I like the KSM44 a lot as well but the KSM 32 amazing me and very often beats out the 44 in mic shoot outs.

Well since Jonathan said <I'll use them mainly as drum overheads, but also for recording my saxophone, acoustic guitar, and vocals.> IMHO the KSM44 is better suited for all of those applications. I never was impressed with the KSM32 on vox but as overheads it does a great job but as always YMMV. :-)
