Hey everybody I need some quick advice:

I am a guitarist/pc-musician and need good near-field monitors
for accurate mixdowns. I am going to return my Roland DS-50A's.

I know you have heard all this before but if you had recommend
only 1 of these two: Krk v6 or Event PS8 which would it be?

Thanks,
RD

PS I listened to both and am leaning more towards the events,
but if any of you know that the krkv6's are better please let me know.

I like Event monitors.......... but you need to use YOUR ears to decide, not other people's opinions. You're the one who's going to be listening to 'em!

Bruce

The Krk's are cuter

Couldnt you see the granite finish on those babies.

If that were what it all is about go with the krk's good looks

For better near field monitors the events win that test.

But it sounds like you allready know what to choose. so go get the events allready.

Ehhhhhhhhh Are we all serious here?
I'm sorry but I don't really think you can compare KRK V6's with Event PS8's? I think the KRK's are definately in a higher league, for a start they don't have the build-in Event hummmmmmm.
For slightly less you might also want to consider the JBL LSR25P, which in my opinion beats everything in the under $1200 a pair bracket.
The 25P is also vast becoming the surround monitor for a large number of post production houses, which should tell you a lot.

I am serious! I DO like my Events!!! ;)

I have no idea what the KRKs are like, since I haven't heard them, so I can't comment on them at all... but I was also serious about him using his own damn ears and not our opinions!!!!!!!!

I am, after all, a very SERIOUS individual ya know!

:D :D

Well, I must say that I am partial to the Events.

But, you must figure out what sounds best to you.

Also, which ones can you afford?

If you can afford both (either/or), you could do this...

Purchase a pair, then if you don't like them you can return them.

Unless they won't give you your money back (instead they might decide to give you a store credit). You should pick up the cheaper (dollar wise) pair first.

I am sure that you won't have to go through all of that type of stuff. You should be able to come to the best decision while you are at the Pro Audio store. :)

LOL Blue Do me a favor, just for fun? Go to your local store, borrow some V6's, LSR25's, take them home and listen?

Spinster - I would NEVER buy any monitors after listening to them in a store. Take them home and work with them for at least a couple of hours. Every good store should have a pair of demo's for the purpose.

It might seem that I'm always bashing the Events, something I don't like to do, even less so as Event is near here and the guy who owns Event is a good friend. But, I can only state my professional opinion, and that is that I find the 20/20's to have some serious design faults, which render them, in my opinion, useless for accurate mixing.

replys to all

Thanks to everyone for their advice and tips.

I did listen to both, and liked the events better (btw i'm not taking about the 20/20s but instead, the ps8, which is similar to the 20/20bas but not identical).

sjoko2:
I notice hardly any "build-in Event hummmmmmm. "
Also what "serious design faults" does the PS8 have?

Thanks again to everyone!

RD

Doesn't really matter! Use what you're comfortable using!

The Events don't have an appropriate heatsink, and due to the design of the amp/speaker/enclosure combo, heat will escape through the speaker cone itself, mainly the top half of the speaker. This does change the characteristics of the monitors, in other words there is a difference in tone when the monitor is hot, and when its cold, a difference which is more prevelant as it is only half of the cone that gets hot.

Well I got the PS8s and tested them out and I am very happy with them. They translated well to the cd player in my car, my boombox and my moms little kitchen cd player.

Upon reflection, I don't think the krk v6s would be better. First, the LF speaker is 2 inches smaller in diameter than the ps8 and has a worse dynamic range and less wattage. Also, one of the guys i trust at sam ash told me that the more expensive krks are very nice but the ps8 is a better bang for the buck than the krk v6.

Plus when you consider the acclaim the 20/20bas has earned and the fact the ps8 is basically version 2.0 of the 20/20bas (the ps8 uses the same drivers, enclosure and active 4th order crossover as the 20/20bas) the decision becomes easier.

Well anyway, The ps8 has converted me to an EVENT supporter.

Thanks to all!

ON the other hand RAPD - sjoko2 is a very serious pro and knows his stuff cold. I wouldn't dismiss his opinion quite so easily....

But hey, the bottom line is to get whatever you're happy with and can work with......

Sjoko- next chance I'll try and check out the KRKs - you got me curious.

Bruce

I compared the krk speakers and didnt want to buy a subwoofer to make up for the lack of range.

Its my opinion that If you need to supply a sub the monitors are not going to give what you need without one.

The krk rockets were the only ones availible to me to try though.

I think you will find that the heat issue with the Events is old news. I bought a pair of PS 8's and can run em 12 hours a day with no heat probs. I read that you can burn yourself turning them off but that must have been dealt with cuz mine run cool. My only complaint is in the lower power rating. I never mix at loud volume but track at high volume sometimes. The Events will clip when pushed a little bit. Still I like them ten times more than the Mackies. They are close to some JBL's I like.

I will put a infared therm. on the cone to see if there is a issue with heat. I can't see the Eng. at Event overlooking that.

Trust your ears not the hype.

sjoko2,

Can you clarify your response? If you have evidence of design flaws show it. I have a pair and don't have heat probs. This person was looking for other peoples opinions about Events or KRKs. I do think he should trust his own ears but maybe he wants some reassurance for some reason. Recording forums are trusted for reliable info by beginners and responses like your last one makes no sense. If you want to debate as to the qualtiy for the buck regarding the Events I will but if do not use or own them you shouldn't repeat rumors. Pardon me by the way if I sound gruff. I am always amazed at how defensive the so called experts get about there posts. You may be a expert maybe not. Alot of people talk out of their ass on these forums. I personaly would like to see "experts or pros" post some names of records they did so we can go and look in the album sleeves for confirmation.

Once again not a personal attack just tired of stupid responses after my posts.

NWS....

Not that sjoko2 needs me to defend him, but he's pro all the way - and knows his sh*t cold........

This is a Home Recording BBS, so it's not necessary to post "credits" - many of the forum community won't have any.

Not to mention that it doesn't matter a whole heck of a lot what someone's credits are anyways - it becomes quite clear (if one sticks around long enough), who the players that know their sh*t are....

There is enough room for everyone here that we don't have to trip on people's feet.

Cheers,

Bruce

I can understand your view but still want sjoko2 to clarify that response if was intended towards me. I would like to know what he meant by it. I see that both you (BBS) and sjoko are regarded here as knowing your stuff. I just think that if someone regarded here as a expert giving such nonsense reponses toward another persons post that it discredits that person to some of the others looking for helpful advice. I am new here and probably won't stay long. I only look here when bored at work. I do however think I gave reasonable advice on the posts I responded to. Nothing that deserved such a bull crap response.

1. If you take comments personally and seriously - I'm sorry. Try not to get involved with forums like these, you might get your sensitive feelings hurt for nothing.
2. I posted a sarcastic reply, because from your post I gathered that you didn't have a clue what I was talking about. The effect of heat / cold on a part of a speaker cone is not something measurable as temperature.
3. I know the people at Event, personally. Look at my address, look up where Event is, we're a pretty close "sound community" here. They know my feelings about the speakers, because they asked my opinion about them. They build monitors against a budget, and they are good value for money. Rectifying problems = extra cost.
4. I am here NOT because I'm bored. I am very very busy. I am here to hopefully give some people interested in recording the benefit of my professional experience and opinion. You don't have to take my advise, in fact you don't even have to read it.
5. I certainly am not going to start name dropping, as I have nothing to prove. Some people here know who I am, most don't. I'm not here for the glory.
6. I'm really sorry you're bored at work, what a horrible life

Excuse me but you are taking things personal.

I do know about speaker design and the effects of temp on speakers. I do have two degrees one in audio eng and one in electrical eng. Don't count me in as a dumb ass. I am bored at work between projects only. I don't have a horrible life actually I help to save lifes as I work in a R&D group developing life saving medical equip. I also know all about Santa Barbara as I grew up in SoCal. I also know that Santa Barbara is not the hub of the recording industry. You see I have went to school in N. Hollywood and have performed studio maintance in a hell of alot of major studios both in LA and in Seattle. Rest assured I am no dumb ass in regards to electro mechanical devices.

I don't get my feelings hurt either. It is you that made stupid remarks when I contradicted your post. Sounds like you have hurt feelings. Maybe I stepped on your toes. Maybe you feel the need to be the pro on this BBB. I don't care to argue any more but if you step back and take a look at the attitude you chose to take in this thread I hope you see it was immature.
