The number is a measurement of the width of the cone (the large part at the bottom of the speaker)... so 5 equals 5", 6 equals 6", etc.

The bigger, the better! :D

oh wow. So it has nothing to do with frequency response or anything?

Haha whoops :D Misread your original question.

Well, the larger the cone, the better the speaker will be able to accurately reproduce the bass sound. Too small a cone, and you'll end up overcompensating waaaaay too much bass to make up for it.

Like I said, the bigger the better! ;)

Typically, a larger speaker will produce a wider frequency range, but there are other differences between them.

my biggest thing is...

Are those 8 extra Hz really worth the giant price mark up?

That's why I went with the 5's. I wanted to buy the 8's but I couldn't justify paying an extra $150 buck for a 7-8 decibel difference.

wow. So i guess i'll just save up and get the 5's. Seems like the 8 has somewhat of a difference, but eh

well ......... the 5's are gonna be better than a lot of people use for moinitoring so you're not gonna go wrong with those.

But modern music has a lot of stuff going on in the bass.
The larger speakers have a bit more power too so they're gonna have more headroom. Not much, but a little.
And I think you'll find that the larger woofer doesn't just add extra hz down there ...... even the higher bass freqs that the smaller speaker do get to will be more defined and detailed in the larger speakers.

ahhh got it. Well my main objective is to be mixing metal. so i'll probably need the extra bass?

I'm gonna say yes but I'm interested in seeing what the real metalheads have to say.
I'm not a metal guy so don't just take my opinion.

But stuff like say Meshuggah .... there's a lot of stuff all in the lower registers.
I would think it'd help mix that to have as much bottom and definition t othat bottom as possible in the monitors.

Rokit 5's will do fine

but if you're getting really into it and you feel its worth the extra money than go with 8"s

i can honestly say after having the 8's for a couple of weeks I wish Id got them far sooner...even when Im just getting a rough sketch together they are sounding better mixed than some of my previous finished songs

Im not sure of the poster that said RP's rob your mid range..because its not what my ears are saying...and coming from 5" woofers the difference in those few db's is damn noticeable as well

if this is what the jump to $500 monitors does I look forward to my jump to $1000 monitors in the future, not sure the wife will though :)

well, it has a lot to do with frequency response. The larger driver is going to reach much further into the bass frequencies. THAT is going to be VERY important when mixing rock and metal. To me, I wouldn't bother with a 5" driver unless you were just doing like vocal+acoustic guitar or piano stuff or if you just wanted something to listen on but not use to mix. Anything with drums and bass guitar, I'd go with an 8" driver for sure.
