No, this is Tjarko's work, not mine. (We collaborate, but not on this one.) But he and I talk about mixes regularly and have a slightly different approach, so other opinions interest me. But we're converging on this one, because I think it sounds great.
I think the horns are Fiverr hires - the credits come up on the video during their solos. The drummer's Tjarko's buddy, Geert-Jan - they've played together for years, or decades even. Playing like this is way beyond my pay grade. I'm like: 'Slow down, boys - have you heard of Johnny Cash?'
Thanks guys! Indeed, the horns are Fiverr hires. They play my transcription note by note (except for the sax solo in the middle, Dima did that all by his own). By the way, drummer Geert-Jan is also in Through The Branches, my prog band with Tom Gagne which might be a familiar name to some here. He can play the weirdest stuff with lots of ease.
Wong's background is Prince (his bass player, Sonny T, taught Prince! how to play bass when he was a kid). And the first record I ever bought was Prince's Parade, so yeah, Prince is fully present in my system, and it has affected my playing style in some ways. Also my taste in synth patches that sound like swarming bees, I guess. This song might have a bit of Zappa in it too. I was tempted to hire a marimba player for some parts but I ran out of budget because the horns were relatively expensive (the harder it gets, the more you pay). But I heard the entire thing in my head and I couldn't get it out of my brain.
