Yes it does help. And since it's initial inception the korg site now has downloads to convert the tracks to wav files to use in DAWs, something the Tascam pocketstudio doesn't have (yet). It also has a download to make it compatible with windows 98, which is why I didn't get it before. But most importantly for me, it is so SMALL. Calling the Tascam pocketstudio 5 a pocketstudio is false advertising if you ask me, there is no pocket it could fit into. It's still pretty cool but it's at least twice the size of the PXR4.

There's also a PXR4 discussion forum on Yahoo, not a particularly great one yet, but at least it's something.

Soon, I'll be able to give you some samples of what PXR4 can do. I can't tell you how much fun I've had jacking a bunch of outboard stuff into "Mighty Mouse" as my wife calls it. Problem is, MP2 files, which are now on my hard disc take up piles of memory. A 4 minute and 30 second song in MP2 is about 18 Megs, and I don't think y'all want to be downloading War and Peace as an audio demo. We are learning to convert to WAV and then to MP3, so you will get to hear it soon. Soon, by the way, we will have the 3.3v 256mb Smart Media card, which will be supported by PXR4. How about that, Reel Person? 180 track minutes in high resolution? Not only that, to those of you who are not attached, PXR4 and a set of cans will pick up more girls than a rack full of Great River pre's. Oh well, marriage... You take the girls, I'll take Great River.-Richie

That's okay with me,...

for a handheld device, I'm sure it's a lot of fun.

I realize larger flash memory cards will extend recording time, but that's an added cost, and not cheap either. Fortunately, prices on that type of memory is coming down.

I know the PXR-4 and like-devices have lots of cool features, but as 'feature lite' I was mainly referring to lack of input-side mixer, which being a Portastudio person, I've grown used to.

No doubt, if you throw a front-end mixer and larger memory on the PXR-4, you'll extend the capabilities a lot.;)

Your're right, reel person, I can now get 128mb cards for $35, and it's coming down fast. You're also right about a front end mixer, The little Behrenger allows me to record the 2 tracks at a time I want, instead if the ones dictated by the PXR4's admittedly limited I/O's. But what the hell, the Pandora is my notepad, not my studio.-Richie

PX4

I have used it for the past 6 months, graduating from tape. It was a good choice to learn the basics, has pretty good sound/effects, but only has one input. By the way, you can record two tracks at once. Change guitar mode to the next one(can't remember the name) between that and final, tracks 1&2 or 3&4 will record simulataniously. It connects easily to your pc, I use it with cakewalk. The only real problem I have had, and continue to have is I get a card#203 error. I have used the 16mb card that came with it and have also tried a 64mb card as well, still the same error. If anyone knows what the "f" that is I would appreciate the feedback. I have called korg cs and no tech available, no call back?

darren-- you might try asking that on the PXR4 user group on Yahoo.

richard-- where did you find a 128 for $35? The lowest I saw was $46 on newegg.com. I don' t have mine yet but I gotta gear up...

also, any suggestions on waterproof carrying cases? thanks

Sorry, Chip, looks like $35 was a limited time closeout offer, and I'm finding $47.00 also. If your card has not been mishandled (don't touch the shiny gold part, and always carry the card in a case made for it), you may actually need to have the unit serviced by the manufacturer. I have seen the code you mentioned, but it turned out to be a damaged (mishandled) card in my case. BTW, microtech makes some really nice aluminum card carriers cheap. I'm not sure what I'd use for a waterproof carrier for the pxr4, but I'd consider a real small mic case with pinch-foam like Road Ready RRUC, which can be customized to fit the mics as well. Lists for $199, but I talked guitarrgh center down to $50. -Richie
