Im just curius.. anybody know why the Korg m1 is so popular in reggae bands?
seems like every reggae band has one.. what is so special about them?

I don't play reggae but still I have M1.
I don't use it too much because I'm guitar player.
What I like about M1 is design, nice sound (editable), nice keys, midi-in/through/out.
I write music. I don't need expensive arranger-keyboard to do everything for me.
I like to make everything from the scratch by myself.
I paid only $200 for used Korg M1.
It should cost much more even though it is 30 years old. (EDIT sorry type error. I meant 20)

It came out in 1988. According to my math, that's 18 years.

The M1 was one of those bits of gear that set new standards at the time it was released. Even though k/boards have come a long way since then, the M1 is still regarded as a high quality instrument that has a place in todays music.

I'm saying nothing - I got totally flamed once for daring to say the M1 was a great synth... :(

 :) "3" "2"

Those two keys stay too close to each other on my keyboard.
I wonder why
The funny thing is that I mistyped it more then once

It's also popular with alot of Tejano bands down here, but once they cut thier first good single they usually step up to a Triton Le :D :p

I had one (rack version), and I gave it away a year ago. It really sounds dated to me.

M-!

The M-1 is a great keyboard. Light, sturdy, and Great piano/organ/strings, sounds. Touch sensitive, midi controllable,Also cheap now, If ya get a chance on one, BUY IT!You wont' be dissapointed!I've used one now for the past 16 years, both recording, and live, and it's never let me down! Roy.

I'm still squeezing my money's worth out of it. The thing cost a bloody fortune back then. :D

Great piano sounds? I used to own one in the mid 90's and loved it, but I wouldn't say it had great piano sounds. I liked the textures it was able to create, and the strings weren't too bad - but I had the orchestral PCM cards.

True, and I never met an M1 organ patch that I was happy with.

I guess I am the lone dissenter here - it was a great box at the time, but honestly, I was happy to replace it with a Wavestation.

Yeah it was a great keyboard and all, and really set in motion the concept of the Korg Workstation (To be followed by many succesful models), but I would have been happy to upgrade to a Wavestation too. You are not alone.

M-1 is still a great keyboard and good for many styles of music..
Maybe on its way to "Vintage" status.

It doesn't need "Vintage" status, as it already damn-near has "Legendary" status.
