Okay so here's my first official thread here. Although a buddy of mine is trying his best to get me to go computer based as far as recording I'm just not feeling it yet. When I do go there I want to invest in a decent PC/Mac to handle it and right now I just don't want to. But anyway on to my question. After extensive research I am leaning towards the Korg D1600mkll. Can anyone here who has experience or owns one of these machines give me a rundown on it, pros and cons, give me advice for or against it? In addition just let you know I will mainly be recording hip-hop and R&B so with that in mind is it the tool I need?

Can somebody at least tell me whether or not I posted this in the correct forum?

Yeah, you did.
Personally, I'd go for it. I am biased however, so I would say that. I had a read up on it and it seems pretty neat, kind of like one of the things I use {the Akai DPS12i}. I must be honest, computers give you more scope in some ways, but these kind of standalones are brilliant in my opinion. There's not much they don't do in terms of what you're wanting to use it for.

Thanks! So how is the Akai and how is it working out for you? I considered the 16 track version when I was doing my research but there weren't too many reviews on it, so I strayed away.

I use the Korg D3200 for recording and then slip the files on to the PC for editing.
There is no better way for me. Nothing records like a recorder.
Akai gets excellent reviews too. I haven't used them but wouldn't steer you away from them.
I think the D1600 is only 16 bit so I wouldn't use it, for that reason.
Pop into "StudioTrax" for more opinions.

Personally, I love the AKAI DPS12i. I had been recording on a Tascam 8 track portastudio for over a decade when I felt I wanted more tracks and a move over to the digital side of town. I didn't want to go to computer at that time though that's what I was about to do when one day I saw a ZOOM MRS1266. I didn't at that time know such a machine existed, it seemed like a good hands on portastudio but with digital capability so I bought it. It was great except for two things - it wasn't fully 12 track {9/10 & 11/12 were stereo tracks} as I understood it and it didn't have varispeed which has always been a crucial recording tool for me. So after doing two songs on it, I sold it and in the course of researching just about every multitrack under the sun, I settled on the DPS12i. I felt 12 tracks was just about right for me and after some of the 'editing' experiments I'd done on the ZOOM {adding extra bars or verses after I'd mistakenly left them out !}, I knew that was the way I wanted to go. As I have Cubase 5 essentials, I may one day go the computer route, but I really like the standalone recorders.
I always loved the Tascam cassette portastudio and I got kind of creative on it. In a way, what I do with the Akai is simply what I've done all along, but with so much more scope. No way was I going to risk cutting and splicing tape ! It's made a big difference in things like recording drums, for example. Virtual tracks are great too, but to be honest, I used to bounce down alot anyway. An 8 track song might actually have 35 tracks of stuff on it, what with bouncing and track sharing. I hope I have this for many years to come coz it really is a neat machine. If you get the time, have a little listen to some of Rami's stuff coz he's recorded all that on a Tascam 2488. It's {like the DPS24} obviously a superior athlete but it gives some indication of what these standalones can do.
Here's a few links of reviews of the 16 if you're still interested.
