Know of a good BBS for computer issues? I've found a few but they all suck.

I just went down two threads and found a link for one that seems o.k. The site is Computing.net

I just might if I don't find wht I need to know elsewhere. I would just feel bad posting a question sort-of-but-not-totally off topic.:D

Here are a whole pile of links - a zipped directory of urls to be exact. These are all pretty general, if you have a more specific interest I probably have more specific links.

I''ve been down for a while but thanks for all the replies. This is what I was trying to do:

1) install a second HD as slave
2) Use XP to partition it in two and format
3) move C: drive over to new HD
4) make new drive master and old drive slave
5) format old drive and use for music stuff

Things really went haywire at 3). Mostly because I just plain fucked shit up. :( I'm just installing everything from scratch now, but i'll be sure to come back here whining and begging for help when I need it.;)

Well, I'm no expert...but I just did some of this same kind of stuff.

Question - what HD did you get? The reason I ask is that I just got two Western Digital HD's and they come with software that will help you partition the HD & mirror the data from the old drive to the new drive. I used it and it worked great.

It looks like you got through the partitioning & formatting part just fine?

Also there are some programs out there that will make an image of one hard drive on another. I think one of them is called "Ghost" or something like that. I think I could dig up a link or two to some free/share ware proggies that do this as well.

Changing the new drive to master should be a snap. Just changing jumpers. Make sure you jumper the new one to "master with slave". Then change the jumper on the old drive to "slave". Or if you are using cable select, make sure you have the drives on the right IDE connector on the ribbon. Then you should be able to just start up the computer & it should boot up on the new drive slick as snot on a doornob. Then, after you verify the data was imaged properly on the new drive...just format the old drive & you should be in business.

Let me know if you are interested in any links to the software I mentioned. If you have any more specific questions let me know. Like I said, I'm no expert, but I just went though this exact same process not too long ago.

Take care

Personally, I would go for the fresh install. It's always a pleasure to start of with a nice fresh install of OS and proggies.

Very true. I didn't have that luxury when I first did it (was in a hurry). But I just built a new machine & installed xp. Schweeeeet....nice new clean hard drive...yummy :D

I ended up having to do a fresh install but it's worked out OK. Lotsa good info in this thread for future use though.
