I'm really worried lately. My knee has just started hurting reallly bad, but only when I play drums. It's the knee on my kick leg that hurts. I play single pedal dw 5000 dual chain accelerator. I have my throne set so that my lower leg bone and my upper leg bones are at perfect right angles. I play the kick pretty aggressively and I play pop punk music. My knee doesn't hurt when I walk or run or anything, just when I play drums. I'm worried. Could it be a stress fracture?

have you changed the way you have been playing? Often if you suddenly have a drastic change in your method of playing you will have pain. See a doctor.

I second you seeing a doctor. Also, try to find a doctor who understands drumming, if at all possible. I've seen a site before that had a directory of doctors that specialize in treating musician's injuries. I can't remember the name of the site so try searching Google. I went to an orthopedic surgeon for my carpal tunnel, which was really only a problem during and after playing drums. He had absolutely no insight whatsoever into what I could do to minimize the effects of it, other than having surgery.

As a first step, don't play your kick for a while. Could just be an inflammed tendon or ligament that will go away with a little rest. Icing might help too. Seeing a doctor definitely couldn't hurt either.

Good luck man. Hope your knee gets better soon.

How tight is your pedal?
How do you play: Heel Up or Heel Down?

I had leg problems that were brought on from driving me feet into the floor (Hey man, I was snapping PEDALBOARDS in half. I snapped 2 Pearls, and 2 DW's, and I sheared a Danmar Redball Mallet's "no bend" Mallet shaft in half!

All in the name of Volume.

See a doctor to make sure you haven't done any serious damage, and then do this.

Tighten your Springs as tight as they will go.
Play Heel Down.

Yep, it's a pain in the butt to learn, but you know what? I'm one of the fastest drummers around in my region, and one reason for that, was that I learned to play heel down, and then heel-toe.

The Heel Down technique will build the front side of your leg muscles, and even if you revert to playing heel-Up, you'll be a heck of a lot faster than you were prior to doing what I've posted above.

Once you are happy with your foot speed, then you will be able to lower the spring tension if you wish....it's just like lifting weights, the more tension (weight) you put on the pedal's springs, the stronger your foot and leg will be.

Maybe you are sitting too close to the drum or maybe too far away, try moving your seat forward or backward to see if there are any changes. See a doctor
