Kinda dumb EQ question

If there is a bass roll off at the mic (say at 80hz) and also a high pass at the pre (say also 80hz) and then possibly a high pass at the mixer....... are the secondary roll offs ( in the "everything starts at 80hz case) really doing anything?

I mean, are the effects cumulative???
Are multiple roll offs neccessary???

Are there any phase issues???

I think I may have overthought this and confused myself.

Yes - the effects are cumulative - resulting in a steeper roll-off.... if you add another 12dB/octave high-pass on top of another, you get an effective 24 dB/octave rolloff (assuming the two filters are reasonably similar!)

Keep in mind also to experiment with the mic AND board rolloff - Certain mics lose all their flavor with the rolloff, some don't. Some preamps lose all their flavor, some don't.

So, if you're planning on using it on a certain input, try both ways before you settle for either one.

Yeah -- everything *I* do, I do it in MY name........... :p

Thanks guys

I kinda knew it worked that way and then for some reason I got to thinking that the 1st roll off would "eliminate" the lower frequencies instead of rolling them off....go figure.

It made no sense.

Good tip MM, I never though about that.

I will deffinitely pay more attention to the effect of each roll off.
