Hi, I totally suck, and know nothing about recording. I play evey kind of instrument that u can think of from, precussion, strings, winds, brasses, and what not...

firstly, I'm looking to get a simple recorder, that will record on media aside from cassestte tapes (zip disks, cd-rws wahtever). What would a good 6-8 track recorder be?

secondly what pieces of equipment would i need to mix/edit/master (i dont know the terms) each individual track?

thirldy how those tracks get from the recorder (or the media that it is recorded on) to the mixing/mastering/editing stuff?

~thanks

firstly your pc can do the job, but there are heaps of options....adat, reel to reel, dedicated hard disk, etc.etc.

secondly, you can get software for the p.c. for the other options you will need a mixer, and you may want a compressor, a gate, a multieffects unit etc. etc. and cdr or dat or md or hd to master to 2 track

thirdly....using leads, through the auxilarry sends in your mixer, or the inserts, all in one units such as the fostex vf-16 have there own processing gear built in ...

hope i haven't missed anything, and i hope this is what you wanted to know... if there is a studio near by, it might be worth asking them if you can check it out, most engineers like to brag constantly about thier gear so i'm sure they'd give you a look...if a picture tells a thousand words then seeing it for real will tell a million

understanding!!

hey, im getting some clarity now... i'm looking to do recording without a pc. do the hdd recorders, and removalble media ones ever come as recorders only and not as all in one units? what would be some to look into? i've probably seen them but im still pretty clueless :-)

is that an all in one studio or jsut a recorder?

the vsr 880 is just a recorder, although i think it has some optional internal effects....i may be wrong but i think thereis also a vs880 which is an all in one unit, you see the vsr880 has 8 outs, one for each track to be re-routed through the desk/ effects then into a 2 track

okay, im getting somewhere now, im starting to know what i want. I want a digital recorder *media still undecided upon), with bare features, 6 tracks, bouncing, and thats about it. basically a cassette recorder, that doesnt use cassettes.
