Just got my Musicians Freind Xmas catalog, and in the closeout page in the back, I saw that they were unloading their stock of CAD M37 LD conensors for $99. This is the same mic as the M77 but in a snazier housing, packaged exclusively for MF and GC.

I am a huge fan of the higher end CAD mics, and was a little hessitant about a mic advertised as "using components manufactured overseas, and assembled in the USA", but I took the plunge last year, and love this mic.

I warn you that it has a lot of midrange, and some people dont dig that, but it seems to work for me. I do a lot of high harmony, and it does a nice job of bringing the primary vocal out front and still makes the BG Vox easy to hear.

I was less than thrilled w/ the results on an acoustic, but thats not what these mics are designed for. Surprisingly, I got pretty good results micing my electric guitars through my old Fender amps.

Not sure what is up w/ them selling em so cheap, but I dont see how you can go wrong for $99. If you were looking at Octavia and Marshall as inexpensive starter mics. I think you would be a fool to choose those brands over the M37. CAD is a great company, and you will find their mics in most high end studios. Hope they arent going out of business or anything dire like that.

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up!!

I bought one. Its pretty DaRk.....I'll find a use for it. $99 how could I not buy it?

I initally had the same reaction, but it turned out to be a proximity effect issue. If you fool around w/ how close to sing/play, there is a nice sweet spot! If I had to choose between this and the brittle sound of a lot of the Rhode mics, I will go w/ the CAD!

You are right, how can ya lose!!!

I have used it a few times as a distant room mic. for a loud giut. cabinet, and it did OK. So I would assume a pair would work well for overheads!

Let us know what you think when you get it, as CAD is pretty much overlooked these days in the home recording market, but has some nice LDC's.

Did anyone ever figure out why MF was selling em so low?

Low-end CAD mics can hardly be considered "killer"....

YMMV...

I thought it was YMMVE in Canada.

Your Mileage May Vary, Eh ?

Bruce,

I would put CADs Equitek line up against anything in their pricerange. I would put any of em(E-100 excepted) in my case before I would the much overhyped C2!!

Which CAD mics have you used?

I haven't tried the m177 (ie-m37) but I own two of the multi-pattern version of this mic, the M179.

In my view, it's the best value going in multi-pattern mics. It's very neutral in omni and there's a nice warmth on vocals when you get in close in cardioid. I'm waiting to record a classical guitar quartet using these mics set to bi-polar in a blumlein configuration.

I have tried this mic next to an mxl v67. The v67 is brighter, the m179 more natural sounding (in cardioid and especially omni)

This mic is comparable to a TLM103 in terms of detail and that's where CAD is aiming in terms of specs. 11 dB self-noise (A-weighted), frequency response of 10Hz to 20 KHz flat as a pancake from 10Hz through to about 3.5KHz with a few "wobbles" between 5K and 20K. It can also handle SPL's of up to 143 big dB's. The capsule is the same design as what went into their highly regarded Equitek E-300 (since replaced by the E-350). The capsules are now manufactured in (yes, China) but quality control is strictly managed by CAD. The amplifier section uses advanced op-amps instead of discrete components to help keep costs down, as well.

I personally am a fan of the AKG 414 which I've used a fair bit on freelance projects since 1988 as a sort of "jack of all trades" mic. I would be so bold as to call the M179 a "Poor man's 414". You can hardly ever go completely wrong throwing up a 414 and that would be the same for this mic.

By the way, the English magazine Sound on Sound gave them a stellar review last month and I bought mine based on that review. I haven't been disappointed.

As you'll recall these were the mics that started the now famous "Help with wife" thread a while back.

I really can't understand why CAD haven't made as big a mark in the home recording scene as these great mikes would suggest they should.

Kelly, with such a glowing review of the m179, you MUST post a vocal sample of it, immediatley. Dont make me beg.
