Damned if I do
I'm curious as to how y'all smack that bass drum. I am of the school that says the beater must not remain rested on the head on a hit, yet most drummers I see tend to do this. Me, I let the drum speak for itself.

Please don't just vote. Expound on what works for you. Thanks.

Depends on the song, or even the part of a song for me.

A slower song, I'll hit and release for more sustain.
A faster song, I'll hit and hold for les sustain and more attack.

If it's a double bass part i'll hit and hold so that the hits are better defined, plus it helps my feet keep time.

Some songs might have a mellow verse with maybe just bass & vox, i'll hit and release switching to hit and hold for choruses.

But sometimes I do whatever I need to do in order to play the part most comfortably.

I only hit and release, I don't like the sound of holding it.

hit it and quit it ;)

note; evans emad head, with emad reso head makes a killer sound. nice thump, very minimal padding inside. i think i might even take it out. not too much resonance, but just the perfect amount i think.

tragik - I like the EMAD. I have one on the batter side and when I get paid I'm going to buy one for the reso side... Right now I have some shitty ass head I don't even know what it is w/ a free-handed hole offset and it's got paint on it and I really think getting a better reso head will make a world of difference

My technique sucks, I fail to release the beater after the strike. It sounds okay, I guess. Not enough time to practice anymore, either. :(

hit and release

staying on the head causes it not to resonate and if you're playing double kick would actually mute the hits of the opposite beats. i dunno, not my cup of tea at all and wouldn't suggest anyone to hit and hold.

I play heel up so hit & stay works for me.

I don't think there's any great loss of resonance. It's the shell an resonate head that do most of the resonating

I am not a real drummer, so I chose the last one. :D Whatever works!! ;)

I would consider myself a 'real' drummer, but I chose the last one.

I use different techniques for different effects. Hit and hold gives a great punch with a nice amount of shell resonance, hit and release gives more sustain for slow, open stuff.

Ditto!

My brain dposen't work fast enough to send the signal to release.

both...just depends on what kind of sound I'm wanting....like a guitarist palm mutes or picks open...If I want a more muted less boomy sound, I'll bury it....so I didn't vote since it wasn't an option.

Heel toe....

Both.....

OK, so my poll options were a little lacking, but I still am glad for the responses so far.

Anyone else want to weigh in?
