ok, so i just busted my super kick head and i thought that i might try something new. i'm wanting a head that can give me that fat,
loud, and low down (with a little tap/thud) sound. any ideas?

i was thinking mabye a......

powerstroke?

evens eq head?

and while your at it please tell me some good placements to also help me get that sound.

thanks alot!

Depending on your drums, don't rule out a good ole' Remo Black Dot. They don't last quite as long as others but they are very big sounding with the right drums. They're also not too expensive either. I've used a Power Stroke for a long time now and I've had enough. I need some sound (just my opinion!!).

I've been thinking about giving one of those Powerstroke 4's a shot. They're pretty cheap for a 2 ply muffled head.

Zeke, just make sure you're using a good bass drum mic (Beta 52 is my choice). Cut a hole no bigger than 4" in the front head and boom your mic in the drum about half-way and point it at the beater spot, kind of at an ange. There you go...an incredibly punchy thud.

The evens heads are pretty expensive if I remember correct but I've heard killer kicks with them. The powerstrokes are pretty good too. It's all about your tuning though. I've had awesome results with the aquarian heads. I really think you can get a good sound out of almost any head. You should be fine with any of them

the letterq,

i have tryed that mic placement but all i get is a muffeled poof sound that is very weak. here's what i got.....

dw/pacific cx-series 22" kick

shure beta 52

aquarian super kick (batter)

aquarian head with 4" hole a 3:00 (front)

i don't use any kind of muffeling in the kick because i think that it sounds great without anything. the best sound that i have ever got is by just putting the mic on the bottom of the kick, on a foam sheet, about 2" from the head. this placement sounds good, but don't work for everything.

Try out an Emad. Those totally rock! I know when I get my new kit I'm getting them for both my kicks.

I also am a fan of the Evans EMAD. I now have them on both my main kits (Brich w/20" and Maple w/22"). I'm thinking about putting an EMAD on my 18" kick as well.
