Hi, i still need a kick drum mic, and i found a Shure SM 91 with Preamp? (why does it have its own preamp?) on craigslist for about $110. i looked it up on ebay and its running about $260 so i figure its a good deal, but i've been looking around the forum for the best kick/bass drum mics and i never see the SM 91 mentioned. is this a microphone i want to steer clear of or is this a nice find?
I might buy it today, the decision rests within you guys!
The SM 91 is a Pressure Zone Microphone (PZM) which actually works pretty nice for many studio uses including kick drum mics.
It may not sound like what you are expecting a dedicated kick drum mic to sound like.
It is a dynamic mic but seems to have some sort of in line preamp for some reason.
I wish I had a few for room mics or specialty uses but you may not want one if your mike locker needs to have more conventional holes filled.
