Hi folks,
being having fun home recording but haven't recorded drums as yet.
Have a little band coming soon to record.
I have a resonably idea as how i want to go about it with the gear i have.
Yet i don't have a proper kick mic. So from the list of mics supplied what might do the job as a kick mic. Thanks
Senn MD 21 (old omni broadcast mic)
AKG 310s
SM 57
Byer opus 59s
Aoi UD-273 (some Japan made item seems very robust like 58 in looks)
Have a couple of cheap LDC's
Nady SCM 800
MXL 2001
Was planing to use the MD 21.
Thankyou Luke.

I've heard of an 57 being used on a kick before... All the other mics I have no experience with.

Most any decent mic will work, arguably some better than others but the kick sound itself will have the biggest impact. You can't make a lousy kick sound good with a great mic and signal chain. That being said either the 57 or Sennheiser inside or one of the LDCs out in front of the kick out about 8" as high as the top of the drum angeled down. NOT in front of the hole if the front head has one!

Yup, 57 or MD421. I personally would go 421 as a first choice and see how it works. To expand on Track Rat, if you do use an LDC, the reason you don't want it in fornt of the hole is that the air movement can damage the capsule of an LDC. The holes allow big gusts of air to blow through which are much more powerful that a typical pop from a vocal for instance.
