Kick drum head opinions?

I'd like to get some opinions on kick drum heads for recording. I Know that some people feel what's best for giging is not what's best for recording. I don't really have the time or money to experiment so opinions would help. The drum is 22", the beater is hard felt, and the style is...I dunno. Rock, I guess.

Check out the Evans EQ4. I find it a little bottom heavy, but a good kick head none the less.

I use the Remo Powerstroke on the beater side (tuned moderately loose), and then a Remo Ebony Weather King on the front (tuned looser than the beater head) with a 6 inch whole cut in the side for the mic to stick in (not all the way, just up to the end of the capsule part) and a long towel touching about 6 inches to a foot of both heads. It sounds awesome; effortless to get a good tone.

BUT, and I stress this as a huge 'but': I use a rubber beater. I strongly, strongly recommend getting one of these, or at least a wooden one, because they make the attack much more pronounced. This allows you to keep the front head on, but not push the mic up against the beater head for attack, and thus get a fuller tone since you're getting sound from the beater and front head.

Good luck,
Ryan
