keyboard vs guitar amp

i just got a yamaha s90 and am looking for an amp. how important is it to get a keyboard amp over a gutiar one?
anything anyone suggests in the <$400 range? i'll be using it for practice and small gigs. thanks!
 
I would strongly suggest a keyboard amp/combo (vs. a guitar amp).

Keyboards produce a very wide frequency range and you really need an amp (and speakers) designed to cover the low end and the high end.

A keyboard amp normally has a 15" (or at least 12" for the lows and some type of tweater for the highs). Guitar amps tend to handle the mids & mid highs well but aren't designed for the lows & highs of a keyboard (in particular the lows).

Some people use bass a combo - but most of these don't handle the highs as well as needed.

Roland has the KC series of keyboard combos that work well. Peavey use to make a KB series which I liked alot - but I don't know if they still make them.
 
I agree with mikeh. A keyboard amp is the way to go. If you compared your s90 sound from a guitar amp to a good keyboard amp you would hear a world of difference.

I use a Peavey KB/A 60 amp and it does the job and has a good sound. I would look around for a good secondhand keyboard amp for sure.
 
thanks for the tips. i think i'll be getting a used roland kc-300 i saw for about $350.
