Hi I have a quick question, im somewhat confused.

All the synths that come on a keyboard in the different banks will play when you play the keys. You can adjust effects etc. on the keyboard with a variety of functions.
However, once you go through MIDI into the computer, its only recording the keystrokes. How do I get the sound I created with the synth onto the computer for recording/mixing/adding other effects? Do I have to sample my playing as a sample from the synth's audio output and import it into the computer to do this?
thanks for the help!

This is dependent both on the synth(s) and on the software you're using.

Almost all synths transmit note and controller information via MIDI. Some synths transmit parameter changes using MIDI controller messages, but others use system exclusive (SYSEX) messages. To find out what your synth is doing when you change a parameter, use a program like MIDI-Ox (http://www.midiox.com). Once you figure out what messages the synth is sending (if any!), it's just a matter of making sure your software is set up to receive and record the necessary messages.

Recording the audio output of your synth instead of the MIDI data is the most foolproof, but also the least flexible, solution to the problem.

HTH,
Don

Here are links to two good articles on midi basics - part one and part two.

DonF is right, but his explanation may not pinpoint the question. You need a general understanding of the world of midi before we can go further, and a list of your current setup will help greatly in giving you specific help.

Please read the articles that are linked above and post again with your actual questions and as much of a gear list as you feel like providing.
