Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying a keyboard/piano because my wife (and myself now) wants to learn piano. Which is just perfect because I wanted to get one for my Home Recording Studio anyways for sounds effects. So, I would like to get something pro with learning features. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hey D’Singer

I have a Korg N1, so I figured I would throw it at you as an idea. I use it as my portable piano. To my ears it’s a great synth, its probably not as good sounding as newer better keyboards, but your not going to pay as much for one either. The reason I think it might appeal to you and your wife is because it has 88 weighted keys.

Here is a sample of it

When I bought it I went to the store to buy a piano weighted midi controller to use with my roland JV1010. The controller was $600, the N1 was $800 and the action of the keys on the N1 felt much better to my fingers. The fact that it iwas a fully capable midi snyth was just a bonus.

Also, it’s solid, if there was an earthquake I would hide under my N1. But one should be warned, the menu / patch selection layout is not the best in the world, I am used to it now, after spending a lot of time with it.

There's one on ebay

Good luck in your search!

Gunther,

Thanx for the suggestion. I'll keep looking around. It's hard to find the N1 on the net (other than ebay). What about the N5? I've found some at reasonable prices.

Thanx

From what I understand N1 and N5 are pretty much the same thing as far as sound, except that the N1 might have a little more rom and a few sounds that the N5 doesn’t have. The reason I suggested the N1 is that you can probably grab one very cheap and has a very nice feeling 88 key piano weighted keyboard for your wife to learn piano on. If that’s not what you need, you might as well get a newer better sounding keyboard. I have seen tritons in the $1000 range on ebay and trinities for less, they will be a better buy then an N5.

Of course if money is not an object, get a Kurzweil.

But it’s all about what’s important to you, and how much you have to spend. I do my sequencing on my PC and already had a decent sound module, so what I needed was a decent board I could really play on, the N1 fit the bill for me (it sounds better then my module too, on most patches). If you want to do sequencing on the board or sampling, then that would affect what board you should buy. You might even want to use a software synth and just buy a midi controller.

Actually, the best thing would be to go to guitar center or sam ash when you have some time to kill and play around in their Keyboard room. Each keyboard has a different feel and sound. I might recommend Korg, Yamaha or Roland (and I do) but you might like the Alesis or E-mu. Only you can tell that.

For just piano, nothing beats the Real Piano Pro by General Music.

But it only does Piano and Rhodes well, not much else
