was wondering if its possible to insert or download sounds/synths onto a keyboard and then designate that perticular sound or synth to a certain key or bunch of key's. and if so how can it be done and what makes and models of keyboards can do this.

This can be done, but is a keyboard your most effective method?

What is the purpose that you want to do this for?

If it's just to split keys, then a keyboard is exactly what you want.

However, if you just want to trigger different sounds in a musical way, then I suggest you get one of those modules or groove boxes (samplers) with the large finger pads on them.

They will all do it to a cetain extent. Digital PCM/sampler based keyboards can sometimes load new samples as well as different envelopes and parameters to modify them. Analog and digital synthesis boards can download other parameters and envelopes also.

More importantly what kinds of sounds are you looking for?

well im really influenced by bands like NIN so i would like to get the weird and strange effects like thier's and would like to generate them from the keys. i would also like to create my own "cosmic noises" and i was wondering if this could also be done on a better keyboard or sound module by distorting different sounds in every way

I don't listen to Nine Inch Nails, so I can't help you there.

Can you describe what you intend to do?

Carl

i intend to somehow develop sounds on my computer o whatever and then transfer those sounds onto a keyboard where i could customize the keys to the sounds i want

I do this with my Alesis QS 6.1. It's a fairly inexpensive (and not incredibly popular) keyboard, but I've been very happy with it. I play in a number of bands and I've needed samples for sound effects or sounds that can't be generated at all (voice samples, the wierd guitar effect on 'Baba O'Riley', etc...)

It's not the easiest to work with though, and you have to buy the memory card separately. (about 80 bucks).

Heres another route that might get you what you want. Get yourself a Waldorf Microwave XT, and program the sounds on that. It will make all the wierd cosmic sounds you ever wanted, and has lots of knobs to do just that. For the kind of music you are talking about, this would probably do it for you..

You just hafta learn a little synth programming, which is no big deal...
