keyboard sampling synth

i have a yamaha psr530 keyboard which i use its effects for digital audio recording...the keyboard has midi inputs and i have a sound card with a gameport connection..i have cakewalk pro audio 9..can i use other sounds besides the general midi 127 voices and the 10 drum kits..on my computer using software or i need more hardware for creating synth sounds, drum machine, samples..i dont know midi that well and the way it links up..if you have sites or information on what you can do with midi with your pc...

Depends on the soundcard. The SB Live supports a sample format called Sound Fonts and so the sounds you can load into it are virtually unlimited -- if you can't find it you can make it yourself. Turtle Beach/Voyetra's Santa Cruz and Montego II cards have a similar thing called DLS (downloadable sounds).

There are also softsynths -- synthesizers that run as applications on a host PC rather than in a dedicated synth module...


i dont know midi that well and the way it links up..if you have sites or information on what you can do with midi with your pc...
