thebear: the dr-5 is kinda like a hybrid drum machine/cheap keyboard box. it is specifically disigned for guitarists (such as myself) so that the keys are laid out like the frets of a guitar. this is what i have, and am kinda looking at some synths.......

yeah BBB, you have a good point about roland units prolly using the same drum samples....... i was never too disappointed in my dr-5's drum sounds though (i get by ok with em!), i was jus looking for some cooler synth sound (i get cool sound on the dr-5 though when i process and eq the key sounds thoputh)

anyway, thanks for all the info everyone! some of these keyboards sound pretty cool (i thought the kawai sounded pretty neat... ). i'm gonna try to hit some music shops here and see if i can't try some stuff out!

Ok. You originally stated that you wanted good piano, strings, and organ stuff and that it'd be cool to make original sounds. If that is still the case, the DR-5 still compares well with the 1010 and even 1080/2080 for basic sample quality (not just drums, i.e., good piano, strings, organ, etc). Thus, bring the DR-5 with you to compare the sounds to the prospective synths to be sure you are actually getting better bang for the buck.

The 1080 might not be a bad choice considering your price range and your desire for synth sounds. It is expandable with four expansion slots for expansion cards. It also has built in effects and the ability to combine sounds into patches and performances. Very editable when compared with the DR-5. You can probably get one used for under $600.

Good luck with auditioning the synths.
