keyboard hiss

im tracking a gospel group on a korg d1600 and im running two lines out of the keyboard straight into 2 channels and im getting a hiss. its quiet when you go into an amp with the keyboard...but when i go into the recorder its noisy. im gating it...but on intro's and songs where the keyboard has a solo part (with no other instruments) you can hear the gate cutting off the keyboard before the natural decay. I have the gate threshold as low as possible to eliminate the noise. any suggestions?

If you just picked up the hiss sound, like maybe you didn't haven't a while back, you may have a bad cable.

Turn on the unit and move each jack plug gently back and forth. If you can get the hiss to quit and start, it's a cable or your connecter may be dirty or worn or half shot.

Or it may be originating within your keyboard but that's a bit more for someone who knows that board.

Wiggle all of the connectors and see what you get.

Are you getting enough gain going into the recorder? Sometimes keyboards need a little boost and if you dont have a good preamp on the mixer that might be where the hiss is coming from. The amp doesnt need as hot a signal so its not generating extra hiss.

I'm not familliar with D1600 so I cant be too specific. If thats an 88 key piano/organ sometimes they arent as quiet as the more pro/recording oriented keyboards.
 
thanks for you replies guys. I don't think its the cable cause i tried to other cables and still got the hiss...plus the same cables into the amp are quiet. im gonna try going into a pre-amp...if that doesn't work i guess i'll just put a c-1 mic in front of the amp cabinet and do it that way
 
If you are recording organ or rhodes sounds you might like the sound of a mic'ed cabinet better.
