Yo Walters:
I guess those Organ Bass pedals are vestiges from the Hammond Organ of old.
I had a good friend who was quite a good Hammond player; used to stop in when he did the intermission break for big bands at the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago, way back when Lou Breeze was doing the band gig at the Chicago theater.
I was amazed watching his guy play as his feet were going one way, and his left hand one way and his right had in there fighting for recognition too. But, he was playing solo for 20 minutes and the large and strong bass pedal sounds were probably needed to create the "beat."
Maybe some of you out there remeber Ethel Smith [I think that's her last name!] She played "Tico-Tico" in a movie and her fingers moved so fast that they blurred the camera shot--so, she had to do it over and play slower as the cameras of those days were not digital or able to cope with her finger speed. But, they never did show how fast her feet were moving over the bass pedals. She was indeed quite a player of the Hammond.
There was another dude who played the Hammond quite well--Shay Torrent. He released a record/album and had some great stuff on it.
When I watch Letterman, always like to get a look at the several keyboards Paul Shaffer has on the bandstand--too bad Letterman and Leno don't let the house band do a tune now and then like Carson used to do with Severenson the Doc. Some great players in those bands.
