key recognizer (?)

this is no doubt one to amuse the old hands.... is there any piece of software, preferably cheap and simple, that can recognise the basic key of a sample fed into it. Not transcribing intricate passages of sampled music, but basically telling me what key/chord a simple guitar strum is in... you see, my musical ear is a bit arse at the moment!

I doubt that is possible. BUT, a guitar to MIDI converter will tell you the exact pitch of each note in the guitar strum provided it is played cleanly.

Figuring out the root of a chord with the root omitted is YOUR job!
