Ive got an old DDA q series 32 channel mixer and my dilema is should I even be using it in my recording chain and if I should how could I utilize it better? Heres what I got.

DDA console
2 art mpa's
tascam 1641
computer

Pretty basic entry level recording setup. What Im doing now is going thru the DDA subed right into the 1641. When I use the arts I just bypass the board. I dont have any way of using the outs on the tascam to go back to the mixer really.

I do think the pre's on the DDA sound better than the tascams but Ive got limited space and am not sure what to do. How would you guys set this up? Before I get rid of this board I wanna make sure im not missing anything.

Hope this makes sense...Thanks!

I'd run the direct outs of the DDA and your stand alones to a patchbay along with the inputs of your interface. That's how I have mine set up. It makes connecting whatever you want SO much easier.

For space you can mount your mixer to the wall at working height with four heavy duty bicycle hooks. I've seen it done before and looks kinda sharp - be sure and hit the studs in the wall though.

Hmmmm, patch bay...how can i sneak that in the house without the wife seeing it? Looks like its time for more duct tape!

Does anyone have an opinion or know if my pre's in my dda are average or maybe better? I mean they sound better to me than the tascam's but not like OMG,way better. But then again I may not be staging everything in my chain correctly to get the best out of them?

Hell I dont know?

I've always liked DDA mixers and found their pre amps pleasing to the ear. Don't forget that Midas now own DDA and their Verona series of mixers are effectively DDA electronics.

If space is the problem, you don't need a mixer but you'd have to pay reasonable money to get pre amps as good as the DDA ones. Also, things like monitoring are more convenient with a mixer I find.

It seems that downsizing is not gonna be an option if in effect im going to go backwards as far as sound quaity.

One more question, if anyone on here is using a tascam 1641 how are you using your outputs? Or how would you use the outputs with my setup?
