Hi! Any thoughts on this song would be very welcome!
I've recorded the drums, the upright and one of the acoustic guitars live, from then on worked with tracking.

Hey there Ny...I apologize in advance, my feedback is probably not going to be very helpful b/c I'm ill-equipped as far as experience (and musical vocabulary go) to describe my opinion objectively...but here's my $.02

Cute song (I dig bluegrass). For me, it started out a little "thin"(???). I was just about to start feeling a tad negative towards the song but when the drum beat started at :13 it kept me engaged. So then the bass line began and more things started happening that were interesting. I liked the melody and harmonies were a nice subtle touch. My only criticism (and here's where I wish I knew how to express myself thoughts more effectively!) would be that the mix maybe seems a little blah or shallow? It would be nice if the overall sound was fuller(??), richer(??). Maybe my speakers just suck, lol?! but it seemed like I was listening to something being played on the AM radio in my old 1977 Datsun B-210. If my assessment is fair (which I am curious to see if anyone else feels the same way) then I wouldn't even know where to begin as far as a remedy.

Cool sounding voice too...kinda "Amos Lee/Ray LaMontagne meets Leon Russell/Dr. Hook".

Thanks for taking the time to comment, and you don't have to apologize for anything - your thoughts came out very clear to me! And I find the things you say very interesting - I think I know what you refer to when you "shallow" - thin, that is? Perhaps it is thin, 'cause I really digged in deep with Eq on guitars, dobro, and on the fiddle. Not to mention on backing vocals. Maybe I digged a tad too much.
I agree with you, it would be interesting to see if more people hear what you are hearing!
If you have the time to be bothered, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the rest of my songs (which is intended to be a complete record sometime in January), which is to be found here http://soundcloud.com/fredrik-nystrom/sets/oktobermixar-2-0

Well, thanks again! Fredde

I really liked this. It was great. I liked the song and I liked the sound.

Small nits...

I would have liked more harmony vocal and you could probably turn up the harmony vocal.

It sounded like the mando got just a bit out of tempo when it was playing lead around 1:25. Just for a quick second. Hardly noticable.

Great stuff.

I'm such limited mandolin player, so if it's in tempo it's probably luck!...
Anyway, you're absolutely right about the backing vocals, they are going up! Thanks a lot for helping out!

Real nice honky tonk tune, pretty well recorded too.
The only thing I would do different is the way the bass is played. Why do you stop the notes? I would let them ring for a nice full sound. The only one you let ring is the very last note. Still very good though.:)

Actually we rehearsed it with the bass playing longer notes, but we somehow decided to let the bass play shorter. And exactly how we motivated that decision I can't rememer right now!... I know at least we like'd the overall sound better with the shorter one's.
Anyway - thanks for commenting on the tune!
