Hello Everyone,
I am a pretty overwhelmed by all of the equipment and options to recording audio from my CS10 digital piano and RX15 drum machine (This is an older drum machine, so if there isn't a great way to record the sounds of this I can understand, the piano is more important) to my computer, and I am looking for direction on what I need. I have read about DIs and Audio Interfaces and still unsure on what I need. I am looking to invest some money in the equipment because this is going to be a longer term project of my that I want to dive into but what would I need. If you need more information let me know.

There are two ways of hooking up a keyboard (or the drum machine) to a computer.

You will probably want to do both.

Firstly, it is likely that the Kawai has better drum sounds than the Roland, so you may get away with just dealing with it.

By connecting the line out of the Kawai to the line in of a computer's onboard sound you can record the audio direct. However, this may not sound all that great, which is why audio interfaces are better, being designed specifically for recording. You don't need a DI, just an interface.

By connecting the midi output of the Kawai to the midi input of an interface (make sure you get an interface with midi) you can record the Kawai's midi.

The Kawai is quite sophisticated, and it has its own A/D and D/a converters. You maybe able to record either midi or audio via its USB. Check the manual. If you can, then you don't need an interface; the Kawai has this function already.
