Below is a list of four Audio Technica LDCs together with US and UK prices (both in £s for easy comparison). I dare anyone to justify the 4060 costing THREE TIMES as much over here as it does over there

AT4040

8th Street £168
Digital Village £176

AT4047

8th Street £270
Digital Village £550

AT4050

8th Street £280
Digital Village £540

AT4060

8th Street £523
Digital Village £1,575

Mark,

It can't be justified, at least not easily.

The 4047 for instance has a US list of $695 = 390 UK Pounds. It would be interesting to see what explanation you would get from A-T's UK office, probably similar crap to what SP's Aust., distributor tried to dish out here a year or so back.

That's funny, because SP is one of the few brands that have very similar prices here to stateside. A B1 for £64? It's a markup, but only a small one.

Like the DMP3 ... £176 here now, and that's after the prices have dropped on M-Audio recently. No fair.

How much are the import duties? Often it's your own governments that make the stuff more expensive to protect your local manufacturers.

Local mike manufacturers

In Britain!?

Mark,

Alan Hyatt has made a deliberate effort to create pricing parity for SP products far beyond what most other manufacturers have shown any interest in doing. A-T have their own people in the UK so there is no way they should be able to blame "middleman" importer/distributors for the pricing and the SP pricing should be proof enough that Govt., charges aren't a major factor.

Better buy my AT 4040 while its not too far in front of the us.
So whats import into the u.k, i think its 2.5% duty and 17.5%vat, never seems to work like that though, i think they add another 10% for the pleaure of letting you have it!

it simply might be price competition in the local market moreso than anything else.

i remember living in the uk one summer and taking a seminar at oxford. i couldn't afford a hotel room for even one night. i had to stay at places from the let's go book.

the at4040 is a good mic. you should maybe snatch it up at that price.

Digital Village & Turnkey have the AT4047 at around £500+

I know that DV had them a few years backat £300.

You can get a AT4047 in London for £275 though! I'm hoping to buy another for stereo recording soon.

Don't forget to hassle english music shops they will drastically reduce prices if you tell them you will buy from elsewhere instead!

www.thomann.de or www.musiciansgear.com do them for £325approx. from Germany.

Cheers JK

Mark7, why do you Brits pay such high prices for fuel? It is all tax, you know... fuel doesn't cost that much until the government gets its hands on it.

Buy your mics from the US.

I purchased a number of Rodenstock large format view camera lenses from Robert White in Dorset, because they are less expensive than buying in the US.
