Do any of you ever use a 31-band EQ during tracking or mixing

nope...just the sweepable 3 band on my board.
Why? Whatcha got?

Oh...and I don't use any extra EQ during tracking. I try to get the tone thru mic placement or amp tweaking.

I use the 2 filters and 4 sweepable bands on the SSL channel strip plug for my stuff
31 bands seems a little extreme to me unless you are after a very specific effect.
I'm trying to make my mixing less complicated and a 31 band EQ would fly in the face of that, but then again my stuff isn't all that special so what do I know

I just use parametric.
My preference is to get the track as close as possible then EQ to taste.Ideally no EQ is needed. If you're cutting/boosting a zillion bands your source track is flawed or you're into some kind of electronoca/techno stuff.
I never EQ during tracking, unless you count low cut.

Ya got racks of vintage out board gear for during the mixing.
sometimes a KT31 gets used, but mainly the KT 7 band parametric stereo EQ is the weapon of choice.

I figured a parametric would be a better choice. I thought that maybe 31 band could be used for some sort of specific effect.

Or mastering.

I could be wrong here but I'll stick my neck out anyways and say that 31 band EQs are better for live applications for cutting out feedback in narrow frequencies. At the end of the day try it out and see if you like it.

Now I don't think this is the norm, but as I always say there are no rules.

I use a 31 band as an insert (Analog Console) on the kick drum channel. I use it to take out problem frequencies, for example the 250 Hz area where sometimes the kick sounds a bit boxy, and I sometimes boost around the 4Khz if I want a bit more click. You can do the same with a parra, but I find it easy to reach for the sliders.

Using the 31 band is an old habit of mine that I picked up from doing live sound, I had a spare 31 band in the rack one night so I inserted it in the kick channel (as the drummers kick sounded like poo) and fixed it up in seconds. I always used a 31 band from then on, it was good for when there were 4 bands a night on with 4 different kick drums and very quick change overs between bands.

The other place I use 31 band eq's is as a side chain on compressors when trying to de-ess or de-pop.

Cheers

Alan
