Just to make sure

I am wiring together two wall plates on the inside of my iso room, and one on the outside, so i can ptach in and out of with without being messy. I am using 4 conductor shielded audio cable to wire each of the 3 XLR, and 3 1/4 inch connectors on each wall plate together. All of the connectors are balanced. I was not able to get three conductor wire so i purchased the four, is it ok to just leave that extra wire not connected to anything, as long as i have the 2 wires and the ground wire linked up to between the two wall plates correctly?
 
Sure, leave it unconnected. I might be tempted just to wire it in with the ground, but it doesn't matter.

No. First off, what brand of cable are you using? Second, what you do is use all four conductors. Solder two of the conductors together to use as one and the other two conductors together to use as one. Do you follow me? The only thing is that make sure you use the same two conductors on both sides of the cable. I use Canare Star Quad Microphone Cable for my studio mic cables; which use the same set-up.

I dont know what kind of cable i am using, i got 20 feet of shielded audio cable at Active Electronics, and it has 4 conductors, three are wrapped in rubber insulation, the other is just bare in the main cable. On the back of my wall plates, the XLR has three connectors, 1, 2, and 3.. and the 1/4 inch line has three little prongs Ring, Tip and Ground. If combine the 4 conductors into one, wont i be leaving one open on the back of the connectors?? Thanks :)
 
O.K. What you really got was a 3 conductor cable. The braided wire is the shield. Connect one wire and the shield as ground, then you have two wires left. On XLR hook up the other two as your leads and on 1/4'' hook the two wires togther for your lead (unless it's a stereo jack, then the two wires become left and right). On mono 1/4''
jacks tip=+ or lead and ring and ground are the same thing so use either or both.
 
OK... doing this will allow me to easily link to connectors together on 2 opposite wlal plates so i can just plug into the wall from either side and out and not have to run cable all over the place. i think i am getting the idea here....to finalize...is this correct.???

for XLR- i will combine the braided uninsulated wire, and one insulated wire together, solder that to the "1" pin on my XLR connector, and then route that same wire to the "1" pin in the back of the other connector on the other wall plate. I take the next insulated wire, solder to "2" pin, and then route that to the "2" pin on the other connecter. Finally, I take the third insulated wire and solder to 3, and then route that to 3 on the other connecter???

For the 1/4 inch, I do the same thing with the uninsulated wire and an insulated wire, soder them together, and then solder the combined wire to the GR "ground" prong, and then ultimatly route that to the other GR prong on the other connecter. Then i take the next insulated wire, solder it to TI "tip", and then route that to the other connectors TI. finally take the last insulated wire, solder to RI "ring", route that to the other connectors RI and thats it?

is all i have make sure i correctly do is make sure the wires on each little pin...make sure they go to the exact corresponding pin on the other connector???

i sure hope this is how to do it, this is driving me up the wall....and also, is their proper cable i have to use to make sure i get good sound??
 
Yeah Skyline, you got it.
One thing though, on the 1/4'' jack you only use the ring if it's a stereo connection (like headphones) if it is a standard intrument jack (guitar) then ring and ground are combined (or leave one off).

Yes you got the right cable . A shielded audio cable will block noise from lights, etc. Though some flourescents still get through. The uninsulated wire around the cable is twisted a certain way to have noise canceling qualities.

P.S. Soldering tip: always remember to heat the object being soldered not the solder itself or you will a 'cold joint' which will cause high resistance inline which equals noise and signal loss...
 
Thank you Everyone!!! your assistance is priceless! Viking, how do i know ifmy connecter is stereo or mono. Does it just depend on how i wire it. And one last thing, if i were to wire all of the 1/4 inch in stereo, and then i plugged in a guitar, i would only hear out of one side right???
 
Viking, i have 3 XLR and 3 1/4 inch on each plate.. this should be enough to do without the jumper cables for now maybe??? and THANK YOU for telling me how to do this!!!

Anyways, yes it only matters how you wire it. If you are going to have jack plates in the control room and in the studio ( I presume so ) then wire them all stereo. That way you haave the choice of using headphones or a guitar at any 1/4" jack. If you use headphones the use a stereo input cable at both ends (studio and control room) and if you use guitar then use standard instrument cables at both ends. When you do this the 'ring' will just become and extra ground. Just remember to switch the cables between using headphones or guitar. A good labeling (jack 1, jack 2, etc...) is crucial here! Also make sure when you use the mono cords they push in all the way.

Oh yeah,
I would run a separate cable to each plate or you will only have one set of inputs. If there is a XLR and 1/4" in each plate then you can jumper them together as follows: Wire the XLR as before then wire a jumper wire between pin 1 and ground on the 1/4" jack, then wire a jumper wire between the other two wires and tip and ring ( one wire per terminal ) and just make sure that you use the same color code at each end. Then both XLR and 1/4" function as one input, but not at the same time! If you want them to work seprately you must run a cable for each jack. Like if you wanted the singer to plug his mic in and also a pair of headphones to the same plate.
