Hi,
I have been playing guitar and keyboards for several years as a hobby and a friend of mine has an amazing voice. We'd like to be able to do some recording, but neither of us have any experience recording except on a tape recorder. I have a basic understanding of a home studio setup, but need some technical support to get started.

Here is what I have now:
-Pentium III, 450MHz, 128MB RAM, 20MB HD, CD-RW
-Electric-acoustic guitar
-Keyboard
-MIC's x 2
-Fender Princeton Chorus Amp

What I plan on getting:
-Delta 44 sound card
-A mixer (by Behringer or Mackie) in the $200 range on ebay
-headphones

What else do I need to start recording and making close to professional sounding CD's? Appreciate anyone's input!

  1. A lack of a social life
  2. No other use for money
  3. lots of money
  4. Lots of time to hang out here
  5. more crap with flashing lights than you can possibly imagine
  6. practice practice practice....just like in the old joke
  7. A decent set of monitors
  8. An I am Mixerman button,
  9. a pair of blundstones(I just got mine in the mail this week)
  10. A hawaiian shirt(maybe our local hawaian mafia could help you out)
  11. Ears.....Not the ones you came with from the factory, but another kind that only people who eat sushi in LA have
  12. Cables...Lots of the...With names like Mogami and Carnare on them
  13. an understanding Signifcant Other. the most import tool in the box. Failing that, you need to be a hopeless geek that cant attract a Significant Other. I've tried both ways, and they both work, but the first has distinct advantages
  14. Enough food to feed all the new found friends when they find out you have a studio
  15. Track lighting......
  16. Track Marks(optional)
  17. Coffee...Preferably Comunity
    [/list=1]

anyway...................
that setup sounds ok for now. if you need some info on how to hook all this stuff up, you come to me buddy and will get down to the bottom of this.

A decent pair of monitor speakers. VERY important to get your tunes to sound good on other playback systems other than your own. There are lots of choices out there. Yorkville YSM-1's (passive, meaning you also need a power amp to push 'em) or the YSM-1P's (self powered version) are affordable and can serve you well. Search this site and you'll find lots of good suggestions for things to burn all your disposable income on.

Thanks for the input

Appreciate everyone's help. I will look for some monitor speakers on ebay probably. Once I get everything in my hands, I will be asking for your help putting everything together. For now, I just wanted confirmation that I am acquiring the proper equipment to get started. I forgot to ask... any suggestions on software (new-user friendly, not too expensive, get's job done)?

You'll need a lava lamp and a bong (Chills is the best, IMHO). Software for multitracking, Vegas by Sonic Foundry. Extremy easy to use and learn.
