Hi,
I recently decided to set up a portable, with little budget, a home studio to record my acoustic guitar & vocal.
Currently, I have a following:
Toshiba Laptop:
Interl core 2 Duo 1.73GHz
2GB ram, XP sp2, Cubase, Audacity
Microphone: Shure SM81-lc (got it for amazingly cheap price, used but mint)
Audio Interface:
I tried Line 6 Toneport UX2, Presonus Firebox
So here is my real question:
I've used Line 6 toneport UX2, to record some acoustic guitar(no pick -up),
just basic setup,
mic -> XLR input 1 UX2 -> Laptop
UX2 -> Headset [headphoneout]
using mono channel recording, done.
Using those cool effecets on UX2, and it all sounded quite pleasant and nice, warm to me.
Recently I purchased a Presonus Firebox, didn't really look for *better* preamp quality but more of clean* : since I've heard bad talks about line 6, I just wanted to try out presonus.
The preamp quality , the colour is definitely different, but I cuolnd't say *better* or *worse*.
The main question is, I hear an amazing hissing [white noise] through *Headphone out*.
If it goes over 5~6 trims, I can tell that somehow its outputing a white noise.
Funny part is, I killed phantompower, no mic plugged, no ins, all gains killed,
master output kiled, but I can still hear a white noise from headphone out !!
When I used Toneport UX2, I didn't hear any noise at all , even if the headphone out was set to more than 75% of that whole range of knob[ UX2 doesn't have like a trim.... its just smooth turn right/left]
But than I was wondering, is it only the headphone out ?
so I exported, few testings, and put it into my mp3 , or playing it on laptop,
no, not much noise, so I guess it was only the headphone out hiss* problem.
But as you all know,
when you are recording, you want to be able to hear through headphone what you are recording, so you do monitoring on cubase..
in order to hear that loudly enough, you have to put *phone out* more, but as soon as I do , annoying hissing (white noise) kicks in....
It ends up that I use full gain, or little lesss with +12dB boost, 3 ~5 trim headphone out, and I can finally record lisetning in same time, without not so much whitenoise.
But this is worse, my actual recording is recorded with too much gain and whitenoise kicks in.
Firebox, known as *too little gain* , I 've read a lot of issue about this.
Do you think I am doing something wrong? I'm a bit confused when I'm using a graphic designed mixer for firebox, those options for headphone out,
I've tried them all but still noise...
I'm definitely thinking of returning this piece of gar**** =( and was thinking of getting a Mackie Sattlelite.
Should I just stick with Line 6 toneport UX2 that I liked? along with those cool effects?
or do you think MAckie Sattlelite is better off for me? (I'm just afraid I won't be able to return this tool if I buy, if there is hissing problem like this presonus, I rather stick with line 6 that I never heard hissing)
Thanks and let me know what you guys think....
