So yesterday was recording day for my musical project (i dont call it a band because its not... just me and my best friend writing, then getting other musicians to help us play what we wrote). We recorded a song that was my lead vocals, two hard panned classical guitars, two stereo tracks of 4 back up vocals (three guys and a girl), and two stereo tracks of the four of us ina semi circle around two SD's, me with my classical guitar, the girl and my best friend with steel strings, and the other guy with a baritone ukulele. For those stereo tracks we just played a very un-rhythmic "wash" of guitars and the uke.

my problem though is a lack of bass in the mix. I don't want to add a track of bass, its not what the song calls for. What should take the frequencys of bass in this mix? I can only add so much bass to the guitars before they start sounding bad. help!

Agreed that the classical guitars can only go so low before the "classical guitar sound" gets all messed up. In fact EQ of any kind on classical is somthing I personally try to keep to a minimum, if possible.

If you have an opportunity to re-track, and If you have any choice in mics at all, I might suggest trying a re-tracking of the vocals on the "warmest" mics you got, perhaps even (in an extreme case) taking advantage of some proximity effect with a dynamic cardioid if your lead vocals are a bit thin in the lower harmonics (no disrespect intended, I just don't know if you're an alto, soprano or baratone :) ).

Just a suggestion...

G.
