Hello everyone! My name is Justin. Just joined up the other day. I was able to find some misc information about the old reel to reels on this forum, so I thought Ide join and post a bit!

I just picked up a Teac 6010 for, what I feel, was a steal. I was able to listen to it, and it sounded fine. When I brought it home, I found some issues, to say the least.

First, a couple pictures...because who doesnt like pictures? I got the deck, complete with original Teac take up reel, all the parts, the original manual and documentation, extra fuses and what not, AND...50+ tapes to go with it! All the tapes are in nice boxes. Some are production recordings, some are home recorded. Tons of old rock and roll, which was just fine with me!

Getting to know it with a Neil Diamond tape that had a cracked reel. Figured it would be good practice.

Now for the issues. It would play fine. But if I did a fast rewind or fast forward, and hit stop, the reels would just freewheel and the tape would unravel. Big issue haha. Also the one VU meter doesnt work, and the counter didnt work.

Im a big DIYer, so I just dove right in. Determined that the brakes werent working at all. Found the solenoid to be in good shape, but the right side reel brake was completely seized.

You can see in this pictures how the lower brake lever sort of stays in the released position. It was so stuck, that it was preventing the other side from working since they are linked.

I wont tell you guys what I had to do to get that lever off. Lets just say Im a car guy, and thats what Im used to working on...and it wasnt fun. The lever was completely seized onto the pivot shaft. Once I got it off, I used some fine paper and some lube and got it all working smooth as silk again.

Didnt find much info about these, but the gear all the way on the end was stuck. Wouldnt turn. So...I took it apart. Wow...what a test of patience that was.

All back and working fine! The belt was stretched, so I cut about 1/4" out of it, glued it back together, and its good as new.

So...what did all this net me? Well, the brakes work. Too well now. I tried to adjust them, which leads me to my first question in this mess.

How do I properly adjust the brake system on this thing? There is some adjustment in the solenoid mount screws, in the brake bands themselves, and in the springs that lead up to the little adjusters by the counter. You can see them in the last pic. Right now, they are pretty stiff feeling. When threading the tape for instance, I cant manually rotate the take up reel and have the feed reel turn...just makes the tape tight. But, when I rewind, and the tape comes out of the take up reel, the left wheel spins for a while, letting the tape flap around. The machine does "stop" or shut off when the auto shut off lever drops. Just that the reel spins too much. Maybe the heavy reel has too much momentum for the brake? Just not sure how its supposed to "feel" or act really...

Another question. Any good reason for the nylon screws holding the reel tables on? Mine are all busted, and before I change to metal, just wanted to check.

My rubber reel retainers are loose, but last I checked they were hard to find. So Im going to fill the hole in with something...liquid rubber, and re-drill the hole so it fits tight. Unless someone else has a better idea?

Im not sure if the VU meter is toast or not. I didnt take the AMP apart. I wasnt even sure that it was supposed to work during playback...are they both out put meters? Or does one only work during recording?

I know that was a lot. More than alot. I get long winded haha. I do want to mention that I bought this on a whim for my mom's christmas gift. She had a band with my uncle back in the late 60's early 70's, and they only made one recording...on 7" reels. So I stumbled on them, and decided to transfer them into my PC and works some magic, and surprise her with a CD of her band! The old tapes that came with this thingwere just a bonus, and Ill probably listen to most of them.

I did order a manual from ebay...but Ide like to get started on whatever I can so I have time to work with the audio on the PC.

Thanks in advance to any one that made it this far and to anyone that offers any advice!!

Justin
