Some tips
- Play the exercises at 3 different tempos, at least. If you can't play it perfectly at slow tempo, it won't be good fast either.
- Use heavier sticks than you normally use. Marching sticks are great. You are trying to build stamina and dexterity.
- Get a RealFeel Pad.
- Get a quality metronome.
- Keep your stick height as even and as high as possible.
- IMPORTANT - When you are done with each session with the exercises, spend time just hammering away at what you just learned, combining different patterns, accents, and tempos. Try to create your own exercises.
- Experiment with both traditional and matched grips.
- Worship the paradiddle and all the diddle variations.
- Try to apply the principles to the kit as soon as possible. Move these patterns around to different drums and cymbals, especially ride and hi-hat.
- Emphasize your weaker hand.
